Maintaining a positive mindset sounds useful on the surface. Most of us would prefer to be positive rather than negative. But it can also be viewed as a soft and fluffy term that is easy to dismiss. In the real world, it rarely carries the same weight as words like ‘work ethic’ or ‘persistence’.

People with confidence are admired and inspire others to improve themselves. They tend to take risks, knowing that they can get past any obstacles in their path, and they tend to stay positive even when things are going badly.

After I had forced myself through another 10K race this past weekend, I sat contemplating why I do these things – 10Ks, half marathons, and marathons. I’m certainly not going to win one of them, and it can get a bit unpleasant and tiring during the races.

How can a positive working environment be created, particularly where we have no authority to make changes?
